ISRAELI WORK-WEEK
The Israeli working-week is Sunday to Thursday and half day Friday. The weekend includes Friday afternoon and Saturday. During weekends, shops and offices are closed and public transportation is reduced. Some shops (usually malls) are reopened Saturday evening. Most of the industrial companies enjoy two day weekends by working Sunday-Thursday only. Note that Sunday is a regular weekday. Keep this in mind when visiting Israel and when reading the next paragraphs.

The official currency of Israel is the New Israel Shekel (NIS). Cash dispensing machines (ATMs) are available outside most banks. These usually accept major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club and American Express. Most stores, restaurants and hotels honor these cards.

In restaurants, it is customary to leave a gratuity and if a service charge is not included in the bill, a 10-15% tip is generally recommended. It is also customary to tip porters. Tipping taxis is not mandatory.

Participants requiring a visa should apply directly to the nearest Israeli Consulate or Embassy as soon as possible.

The secretariat of the conference will be happy to supply, upon request, a personal letter of invitation. This letter is aimed only at helping potential participants obtaining a visa. It is not a commitment on the part of the organizers to provide any form of financial support.

ABOUT HAIFA:
Haifa, Israel's third largest city and largest port city, is located on the Mediterranean coast. This city, a whole world in itself, with its beaches, gold-plated Bahai Temple and gardens and its cable car which offers spectacular views of the bay, is further enhanced by the historic Carmel mountain range. Nearly all Haifa's hotels are located on Mount Carmel in an area known as Central Carmel. Travel from this area to the commercial district and the port is by the Carmelit, an underground cable car system. Haifa has two universities, Haifa University and the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Find more in the Haifa Tourism home page.

The symposium excursion will afford the opportunity to visit the fascinating Crusader city of Acre, some 20 kilometers North of Haifa, with its subterranean knights' halls and crypts reputed to be the largest of their kind in the world.
